В Юго-Восточной Азии распространены шарнирные черепахи (род Сuorа). У этих черепах брюшной щит подвижно соединен со спинным и разделен на две половины поперечной связкой. В случае опасности сильные мышцы подтягивают вверх половинки пластрона и плотно закрывают панцирь спереди и сзади.

Известно 5 видов шарнирных черепах. Самая обычная среди нихамбоинская шарнирная черепаха (Cuora amboinen sis).Панцирь ее сильно выпуклый, почти как у сухопутных черепах, темно-бурого цвета, длиной до 20 см. Голова сверху бурая и украшена надбровными светло-желтыми полосками, а низ головы и шеи желтый.

Ареал амбоинской черепахи охватывает Индокитайский полуостров, Большие и Малые Зондские острова и Филиппины. Она населяет пруды, болота, залитые водой рисовые поля, питается и животной и растительной пищей. Самки откладывают по 2—5 крупных яиц длиной около 4 см.

Identification: Unique among the turtles of Brunei in possessing a well-developed hinge on the plastron that allows the shell to be completely closed, with the head and limbs tucked away, this turtle cannot be mistaken for any other species. Its shell is high-domed and smooth, there being a single keel in the center of the carapace in adults, although juveniles may show two additional keels of the sides. The carapace is olive, brown or nearly black, the plastron yellow or cream, with a single black blotch. The face bears yellow longitudinal stripes. Adult males show a concavity in the plastra, while adult females have flat plastra. It inhabits both standing and slow-flowing water bodies, including rivers, lakes, marshes, mangrove swamps, as well as agricultural areas. The juveniles are more aquatic than the almost exclusively aquatic adults.

Natural history: Largely herbivorous, it feeds on water plants and fungi, although worms and aquatic insects are also consumed. Eggs are elongated, and clutch size is 1-6, two clutches being laid a year. Eggs measure 40-55 x 25-34 mm and hatch one and half to three months after laying.

Distribution: This species is widespread in the tropical regions of south-east Asia, from north-eastern India through Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Indo-China, Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, to Borneo, Sumatra, Java, and the smaller islands to the east, in addition to the islands of the Philippines.

Трехполосая шарнирная черепаха (Cuora trifasciata)отличается менее выпуклым панцирем, на котором резко выделяются три черные продольные полосы на желтоватом фоне. Голова светло-желтая с темными боковыми полосками. Трехполосая черепаха водится в Северной Бирме, Южном Китае и на острове Хайнань. Ее нередко можно видеть среди других черепах в прудах буддийских монастырей.
